Description

SELEUKID KINGS. Antiochos VII Euergetes (Sidetes), 138-129 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.40 g, 1 h), Tarsos. Diademed head of Antiochos VII to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟY - EYEPΓETOY Athena standing front, head to left, holding Nike in her right hand and resting her left on shield decorated with gorgoneion and set on ground; spear leaning against her left arm; to outer left, monogram of HPA above A; all within laurel wreath. HGC 9, 1067c. SC 2055.4b. SMA 311 var. (slightly differing monogram). A rare and very attractive piece with beautiful iridescent toning and an excellent portrait. The obverse struck slightly off center and with minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

From an old Swiss collection started in the 19th century.
