Description

★ An unpublished and unique hybrid issue ★

Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 1.81 g, 6 h), Antiochia, July 326. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to left. Rev. CONSTAN/TINVS / AVG / SMANTΓ in four lines; above, laurel wreath; below, pellet. RIC -. An unpublished and unique hybrid issue. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Savoca 129th Blue Auction, 26 March 2022, 1541 (deposits expertly cleaned since).

This unique coin combines an obverse bust of Constantine Caesar with a reverse for Constantine Augustus. The obverse is a die match to the Constantine Caesar offered in Savoca's 13th Blue Auction (2018), 2106, and the reverse is die matched with the Constantine I example offered by Savoca London, Monthly Auction 5 (2020), 871. This is the only hybrid in the 1357 dynastic bronzes presently known from Antioch.
