SWITZERLAND. Basel, Bistum. Heinrich I von Horburg, 1180-1191. Runder Pfennig (Silver, 16 mm, 0.42 g), Breisach. Cross with a six-pointed star in each quarter. Rev. Wheel with four broad spokes. HMZ 1-210. Beautifully toned. Extremely fine.
From the collection of Dr. Max Blaschegg (1930-2021, with collector’s ticket), privately acquired from F. R. Künker on 18 April 1996, and reportedly from the Barbarossa Hoard.
F. Wielandt (Die Basler Münzprägung) describes similar coins from the second half of the 12th century, but they were either struck on a square flan (Wiel. 48-49), or they are round but have a forked cross (Wiel. 58-59). HMZ illustrates a round coin like ours under Basel Nr. 210, but the reference 'Wiel. 49' is to a coin on a square flan.
