Description

Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine and Heraclonas, 610-641. Follis (Bronze, 32 mm, 10.33 g, 6 h), mint in Sicily, 631. Countermark: on the left, facing half-length bust of Heraclius, with moustache and beard, wearing crown surmounted by cross and chlamys; on the right, facing half-length bust of Heraclius Constantine, short bearded, wearing crown surmounted by cross and chlamys. Rev. Countermark: large SCLs; above, bar. DOC 242. MIB pl. 18, Km. 5. SB 883. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. Max Blaschegg (1930-2021, with collector’s ticket), ex Sternberg XIII, 17-18 November 1983, 1115.

This coin was overstruck on a follis of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine from Constantinopolis (SB 810), with considerable parts of the undertype still visible.
