Description

★ An unusually well preserved distater of Alexander 'the Great' ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Distater (Gold, 22 mm, 17.24 g, 6 h), Amphipolis, struck under Antipater, circa 325-323/2. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, thunderbolt. Price 163. Troxell, Studies, group C, 545 ( this coin, DO1/DF2, but with an erroneous pedigree to Santamaria 1949 and Brüder Egger 1908). Boldly struck in high relief and unusually well preserved. A few faint scratches, otherwise, about extremely fine.

The rare distaters of Alexander were called 'chrysoi alexandreioi megaloi', meaning 'big staters of Alexander', and had a value of five Attic tetradrachms or forty Attic drachms.
