Description

ITALY. Salerno. Roberto il Guiscardo, Prince of Benevento, 1078-1085. Follaro (Bronze, 26 mm, 2.53 g, 3 h). Facing bust of Robert Guiscard, crowned and draped, holding cross-tipped scepter in his right hand and globe surmounted by scepter in his left. Rev. City view of Salerno with towers and arcade; in exergue, [VICTORIA]. MEC 14, 71. Travaini, Monetazione type 32. Rare. Fine.

This coin was struck by the Norman adventurer Roberto il Guiscardo, one of the most legendary rulers of medieval Europe, of whom his contemporary, the chronicler William of Apulia, noted that not even Odysseus and Cicero could match his cunning.
