Description

INDIA, Mauryan Empire. Karshapana (Silver, 19 mm, 3.11 g), circa 2nd century BC. Five punches: Bull standing to right, Indra-Dhvaja, Sun, Six-armed symbol with arrows and taurines and an uyncertain symbol. Rev. Blank with a small taurine. Gupta & Hardaker, Punchmarked Coinage of the Indian Subcontinent, 456. Lightly toned. Very fine.

Indra-Dhvaja is the mythical dhvaja/flag that Vishnu gave to Indra for the fight against the Asuras (demons).
