★ A magnificent Carthaginian stater pedigreed to 1936 ★
CARTHAGE. Circa 320-310 BC. Stater (Electrum, 20 mm, 7.69 g, 12 h). Head of Tanit to left, wearing wreath of grain ears, triple-pendant earring and elaborate necklace. Rev. Horse standing right. Jenkins & Lewis Group IVc, 211 ( this coin ). A beautiful coin of remarkably fine style, perfectly struck on good metal. Good extremely fine.
From the Kleinkunst Collection, ex Leu 57, 25 May 1993, 46 and Hess-Leu 31, 6-7 December 1966, 180, from the collection of Captain S. Mavrojani of Clyro Court, Clyro, Herefordshire, Sotheby's, 9-10 March 1936, 146, and likely from the Orrestano Hoard of 1925 (IGCH 2264).
This coin differs quite significantly from the abundant later Carthaginian electrum staters in its high gold content and its remarkably fine style. These characteristics are found on only a very small series of coins, Jenkins & Lewis 207-215, almost all of which came from the Orrestano Hoard of 1925.
