Satterlee, Alfred H. AN ARRANGEMENT OF MEDALS AND TOKENS, STRUCK IN HONOR OF THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES, AND OF THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES, FROM THE ADMINISTRATION OF JOHN ADAMS TO THAT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, INCLUSIVE. (DESCRIBED CHIEFLY FROM ORIGINALS IN THE POSSESSION OF THE COMPILER AND OF ROBERT HEWITT, JR., ESQ.) New York: Printed for the Author, 1862. 8vo, later purple half calf, gilt, onto which has been mounted the original violet-russet pebbled cloth; front cover lettered in gilt; blind impression of U.S. flag on rear. Inscribed by the author to George B. Mason on front flyleaf. Mason’s stamp on flyleaf. Some pencil markings throughout. Near fine. The hardcover edition of a significant early work on the subject. Rather scarce. As political medals and tokens were popular collectables in the 19th century, this work served a real purpose. Unfortunately, Attinelli suggests that Satterlee came to an unhappy end: “His social disposition, it is deeply to be regretted, led him to an early grave. His abilities gave promise of valuable contributions to seekers after numismatic knowledge.” The author’s collection of these pieces was sold by Bangs on December 16, 1862. Attinelli 115. Davis 899.
