Additional materials laid in (see comments). Very good. An extraordinary copy of this very important catalogue, being the Spink firm’s copy with a great deal of additional materials laid in. All of the ancient coin lots have been priced and named, and a number of lots bear additional annotations regarding condition, potential buyers, corrections, and other topics. The additional materials include: several pages of handwritten notes concerning commissions with contact instructions (by telephone or telegram), along with two pages organizing the firm’s purchases on commission in a detailed tabular arrangement; T.L. Taylor’s original commission form; Philip Grierson’s original commission form, giving bids on his own account and also on behalf of Dumbarton Oaks; other commission forms, including those of W.L. Zigmund and Theo Lipin; additional typewritten and handwritten commission instructions, including from Stefan Buzas; a memo from the National Provincial Bank Limited reporting the purchase for Spink of 340,000 Swiss francs; typewritten internal instructions regarding commissions; adding machine tapes calculating the Spink firm’s considerable purchases; and a lengthy handwritten Rechnung from M&M to Spink for some 113,415 Swiss francs. Dr. August Voirol (1884–1967) was a gynecologist in Basel who began collecting in the 1930s and had, by the end of the decade, become so involved with the field that he joined the firm of Münzen und Medaillen as a board member.
