Peteghem, C. van. COLLECTION COLONEL MAILLIET. MONNAIES OBSIDIONALES ET DE NÉCESSITÉ / DESCRIPTION DES MONNAIES OBSIDIONALES ET DE NÉCESSITÉ DE LA COLLECTION DU COLONEL MAILLIET, PAR CHARLES VAN PETEGHEM. Paris, 22 novembre 1886. 8vo, contemporary brown quarter morocco, gilt; marbled endpapers; green silk marker; original printed paper covers bound in. (4), viii, 176, viii pages; 1350 lots; text figures; printed prices realized list bound in. Largely hand-priced in pencil; extra-illustrated; added half-title and title. Loosely laid in is an original copy of Adolph Hess's 16 page February 1877 price list of the Dr. Ludwig Schultze collection of Noth- und Belagerungs-Münzen. Binding a bit worn but sound; internally fine. A very interesting copy of this important catalogue. Included are many tipped-in fine illustrations of obsidional coins, apparently derived from other auction catalogues, and generally accompanied by pasted-in printed lot descriptions. Mailliet was the author of Catalogue descriptif des monnaies obsidionales et de nécessité (1868-1873), the classic work on siege and necessity coinage. Ex Clain-Stefanelli Library; ex Kolbe & Fanning's 2012 New York Book Auction, lot 151.
