Brodhead, John Romeyn, et al. DOCUMENTS RELATIVE TO THE COLONIAL HISTORY OF THE STATE OF NEW-YORK: PROCURED IN HOLLAND, ENGLAND, AND FRANCE. Albany: Weed, Parsons, 1853-1861. Edited by E.B. O'Callaghan. Ten volumes, plus the General Index volume prepared by O'Callaghan. Tall 4to, original matching brown embossed cloth, gilt. 9584 + 686 pages; hand-tinted folding map bound as frontispiece to first volume; fine engraved frontispiece portrait of Peter Stuyvesant in second volume; additional folding maps. Occasional marginal pencil notes, with a couple of handwritten notes by John W. Adams on the subject of Indian Peace Medals. Bindings somewhat worn; intermittent staining and browning. Very good, overall. A massive undertaking, authorized by an Act of the Legislature, passed May 2, 1839. The first two volumes comprise materials taken from Dutch sources; the third through eighth volumes are drawn from English sources; the ninth and tenth volumes are taken from French sources; and the eleventh and final volume is an index. This is the complete first series (later series were published on other colonial settlements). Ex John W. Adams Library, with a few notes of his laid in; ex Charles Davis's November 16, 2013 sale, lot 242 at $425 hammer.
