SELEUCID KINGDOM OF SYRIA.
ANTIOCHOS VIII GRYPHOS, sole reign 121-96 BC. Tetradrachm, 3rd reign in Antiochia on the Orontes, 109-96. AR 16.16 g. Head with royal diadem r., around, stemma. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTIOXOY - EΠIΦANOYΣ Zeus, wearing himation, nude to waist, seated l. on throne with high back-rest, holding long sceptre with his l. hand, on his outstretched r. hand, Nike flying off to crown him; beneath throne, monogram, all within laurel wreath; in the outer l. field, P/E/A. Houghton-Lorber II, 505, 2309.2d; Newell, SMA 405.
Scarce. Strong portrait. Excellent old cabinet tone with some luster. Extremely fine
