Description

Peter I gold 2 Roubles 1721 AU58 NGC, Moscow mint, KM158.5, Bit-122 (R), Petrov 15 Rub. (Plate 27, 180), Sev-90. Variety without palm branch on chest. Obv. Laureate and armored portrait of Peter I right. Rev. St. Andrew standing, holding cross and dividing date 17-21. A remarkably bold striking for one of the most coveted denominations of Peter's reign--virtually always found shallowly struck and/or pierced/mounted for use in jewelry, and simply never so near to Mint State. For reference, we note that a similarly graded AU58 example brought the equivalent of nearly $20,000 in Katz's June 2018 E-Auction 14 (Lot 3040).
