Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (840-864) AU Details (Peck Marked) NGC, Palace mint, Class 1, Rob-Unl., MEC I-840var (legends, no pellets in angles of cross), MG-624 or 626var (legends), cf. Dep-746 (as pictured without pellets, however described as "4 globes"), Coupland-Unl. 20mm. 1.69gm. +CΛROLVS REX, cross pattee / +PΛLΛTNNΛ (N's or IN ligate) MONEΛT, Karolus monogram. A by all indications very rare type, Carolingian "palace mint" coins usually commanding a premium among collectors. Despite Depeyrot recording 61 examples of the type in his catalog, this is the first Class 1 Palace mint denier of Charles the Bald we have been able to locate coming to auction in the past several decades, and it is by all measures a very handsome example at that--the noted peckmarks quite insignificant and just a subtle unevenness in the flan.
