British Colony Countermarked 1/8 Dollar ND (c. 1797-1818) XF, 2.81gm. "SV" countermark on an eighth cut Spanish Colonial 8 Reales. Though both NGC and PCGS have opined this piece as "Not Genuine", this offering has an intriguing history nonetheless. Appearing for sale (also plated) in the Howard Gibbs Collection, Hans Schulman sale from March, 1966, where the catalog description mentions further pedigree to Col. Green and Rumbel (though no specific sales are noted). The description also makes reference to Howland Wood's reference book The Coinage of the West Indies, The Sou Marque, published in 1915, that mentions the possibility of production of an item such as this, "St. Vincent. An act of 1797 ordered that dogs and silver be stamped with an sv monograms. We find Spanish dollars cut in halves, quarters counterstamped thus three times, and pieces cut into eights with one stamp impressed on them". A fascinating item, worthy of further research. Ex.
