James VI (I) Counterstamped "Thistle" Ryal ND (1578) AU53 NGC, cf. S-5472 (for host, countermarks discussed on pg. 76). With Thistle Counterstamp (AU Standard) on James VI Riyal of 1567. A very interesting relic from the revaluation of 1578, the "Thistle" counterstamp finding its way onto a "Sword Dollar" Ryal whereas most are struck on a "Crookeston Dollar" host. The grade is exceptional, by far the highest grade on the NGC census with no others breaking the XF tier.
