James VI (I) Counterstamped "Thistle" Ryal ND (1578) XF45 PCGS, cf. S-5472 (for host, countermarks discussed on pg. 76). With Thistle Counterstamp (XF Details) on James VI Riyal of 1570. A very interesting relic from the revaluation of 1578, the "Thistle" counterstamp finding its way onto a "Sword Dollar" Ryal whereas most are struck on a "Crookeston Dollar" host. A good straight-grade for what is a typically damaged type. This remarkable countermarked issue emerged in response to the soaring price of silver, necessitating the recall and reissue of the earlier Ryals of Mary and James at a value of 36 shillings 9 pence. These coins saw extensive circulation both before and after the revaluation, typically resulting in significant wear and damage. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
