Septinsular Republic 10 Gazettae 1801 VF35 PCGS, KM4, cf. Karamitsos-I.5b. Denomination in Greek. Issued under nominal Russian and Ottoman sovereignty, though the winged lion of St. Mark indicates the territory's historical connection to Venice. This exceptionally rare type, along with the 1 Gazetta and 5 Gazettae denominations, were likely minted in Garitsa, near Corfu. There has been some speculation that these coins were struck as non-circulating Patterns but the presence of Russian-styled anti-forgery incuse edge Patterns likely means that they were intended for commerce. This present example is the only certified piece at PCGS and will command the interest of those collecting this particularly difficult series.
