George V gold Sovereign 1922-S MS63 PCGS, Sydney mint, KM29, S-4003, Marsh-282 (R3). Despite an original mintage of nearly 600,000, the intensive circulation of Australian and South African sovereigns in the international economy post-WWI led to vast numbers being transferred to and from London. The Bank of England ultimately melted nearly 100 million sovereigns, including many recently minted overseas issues like this 1922 Sydney emission. While a smattering of occasional marks and wisps can be noted throughout under magnification, the overall impression in hand remains calm and profusely lustrous. Presently tied for the penultimate grade awarded at PCGS, and bested by just one example there. Privately purchased from Jaggard's in Sydney, Australia; accompanied by their flip. From the James D.
