George V gold Sovereign 1922-M MS64 PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM29, S-3999, Marsh-240 (R2). While original mintage records indicate that 608,306 pieces were produced, it has become clear that most did not survive the widespread withdrawal and 'great melt' of gold coins during the 1930s and 40s. Consequently, this date is among the rarest of Australia's Sovereigns, with just 15 graded by PCGS and an additional 8 residing on the NGC census. The Sovereign available here exemplifies both quantitative and qualitative rarity, featuring a robust strike, limited marks on the flaxen fields, and pronounced mint luster on both faces. Arguably carrying more pronounced mint bloom than the equally-graded MS64 NGC selection realizing $26,400 we had the privilege of handling in NYINC 2023, and we anticipate spirited bidding commensurate with that fact. Privately purchased from Jaggard's in Sydney, Australia; accompanied by their flip. From the James D.
