Gelderland. "Merenstein" Provincial Ducaton (Silver Rider) 1670 XF (Saltwater Effect), KM95.3, Dav-1824. 23.05gm. Accompanied by COA. Salvaged from the "Merenstein" (sunk in 1702 off Jutten Island, South Africa). Evenly corroded but retaining a still visible coat of arms and rider. The Dutch East Indiaman Merenstein was loaded with several chests of silver coins for trade in the East Indies when a reef off Jutten Island torn the ship into pieces. Contemporary salvaging wasn't fruitful, the wreck later re-discovered and salvaged in the 1970's when thousands of Dutch silver coins were retrieved, with much of the treasure yet to be found.
