Description

William IV gold Proof 2 Pounds 1831 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM718, S-3328, W&R-258 (R3). A fabulous specimen, serving as indisputable evidence that no two Proofs are created equal. The combination of a planchet of excellent metal quality with years of careful preservation and a gentle patina create a superb visual effect, deep gold with an appealing gleam to the fields. William's portrait could hardly be any more frosty, a matte butterscotch in texture and color with essentially no disturbance to its surfaces, thoroughly earning its ‘ultra cameo' designation. The largest denomination included in the 1831 Coronation Proof Set, a specimen of this type graded PR63 Ultra Cameo sold as part of our April 2018 Chicago sale for a total price of $36,000, and thus this lofty near-gem is sure to generate even greater interest.
