Qing Dynasty. Wen Zong (Xian Feng) Mother Coin Cash ND (1851-1853) Certified 80 by Gong Bo Grading, Board of Revenue mint (South Branch). Hartill-22.676, Jen-1606. 24.7mm. 6.3gm. Minimally handled and uniformly toned, the piece at hand remains an alluring example of these sublime Mother types. Mother coins were key-pieces in the Cash coinage process. They were the first casts of molds obtained from the engraved master, also known as Ancestor coins, which were carved by engravers and later presented to the Emperor. Mother coins are easily identifiable from their much higher quality in casting leading to more pronounced characters. Such issues were later used to make several molds for casting the circulating issues. Treasures from the W & L Collection HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
