Republic Yuan Shih-kai silver Pattern Dollar Year 3 (1914) MS64 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn32, L&M-72, Kann-643, WS-0166, Wenchao-858 (rarity 3 stars). By Luigi Giorgi. A clear product from the skilled hand of Tientsin mint engraver Luigi Giorgi, featuring a sensitively rendered and more humanistic depiction similar to contemporary banknotes and photographs of Yuan Shih-kai in his attempt at monetary reform. Each detail is painstakingly worked and lights ablaze with mottled lavender hues upon illumination, lending to the near-Gem assignment and superior visual character. To date, only a single other example has been graded similarly across both NGC and PCGS, the Pinnacle example ranking as a SP58, while the Jacobs piece certified as an MS62. Although PCGS has elected to deem all of these Pattern issues as Specimens while NGC designates them as Mint State, we would note that no real difference exists in the finish. Illustriously provenanced and very difficult to imagine being exceeded any time soon, we can hardly think of a more ideal target for even the most discerning of collectors. Ex.
