Description

MACEDON. Acanthus. Ca. 525-470 BC. AR tetradrachm (27mm, 17.04 gm). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5. Lion with long curved tail, springing left, attacking and biting into hind quarters of bull kneeling right with raised reverted head; stylized acanthus flower below dotted exergual line, all within a dotted border / Quadripartite incuse mill sail square punch. Desneux 9 (same dies). SNG ANS 4 (same dies). SNG Lockett 1280. Boston MFA 516. Traité I 1056. Stunning example with figures intertwined and frozen in a perpetual battle. Incredibly dynamic scene engraved with great care to the details that are emphasized by the cabinet toning and soft luster.
