Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, Hieron I (ca. 475-470 BC). AR tetradrachm (23mm, 17.33 gm, 9h). NGC XF 4/5 - 4/5. Charioteer driving quadriga walking right, kentron in right hand, reins in left; Nike flying right above, crowning horses, dotted border / ΣVRA-KΟΣΙ-ΟN, head of Arethusa right, wearing beaded taenia and necklace, hair looped up under band; four dolphins swimming clockwise around. Boehringer 101 (485-475 BC). HGC 2, 1306. Nice remnant detailing on a tight flan with touches of toning throughout the devices contributing to areas of bolder dimensionality.
