Zeeland. Provincial Double 10 Escalins (4 Taler) 1687 MS63 PCGS, Middelburg mint, KM-P23, Dav-A4973, Delm-1074a (R2), CNM-2.49.67 var. (rosettes flanking arms), PW-Ze59.5. 63.02gm. By all indications an exceptionally rare variant of this already very fleeting provincial type, with the usual denomination flanking the circle of shields (written as 10 - SC) replaced by a pair of rosettes. From our research, even the Catalogus van de Nederlandse Munten seems to omit this variety, which is only noted by Purmer and van der Wiel. Regardless, the coin at hand is absolutely entrancing, the battleship gray of its fields brimming with champagne backlight while the devices are expertly rendered. Quite easily as appealing as the Millennia example, and a clear target for the serious Dutch collector. Ex. Cape Coral Collection (Heritage #3089, January 2021, Lot 30172); Hesso-Divo Auction 319 (October 2010, Lot 1827)
