Description

Rama IV Counterstamped Dollar ND (1858-1860) AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, KM-C141.6, LeMay-pg. 95, Plate XXII, 5, Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-pg. 148, Plate F05. Host: Mexico 8 Reales 1844 Go-PM (cf. KM377.8); Counterstamps: Mongkut and Chakra. One of the more singular rarities from the Thai series, and certainly of far greater scarcity than the relatively common Chinese-chopmarked 8 Reales of the same era. Supposedly produced by the Treasury--though Krisadaolarn and Mihailovs state that they were privately countermarked in Bangkok--during a shortage of 'bullet' type coinage, most survivors come in relatively poor condition, with the Norman Jacobs specimen ranking as a mere VF35 by comparison, and realizing $20,400 in our July 2020 HKINF sale. To date only the second example of the type we have offered, and a coin that retains a notable degree of eye appeal in spite of the noted cleaning.
