Description

Republic gold Escudo 1852 C-CE AU Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Culiacan mint, KM-Unl., Grove-Unl., Buttrey/Hubbard-Unl., Long-pg. 117 (1 Known). 3.33gm. An intriguing and highly unusual mint-date, seemly unrecorded in the standard literature, though Long documents a report that a single example exists, which he had not himself seen at the time that his book was published in 2004. When Stack's offered this same piece in 2010, they supposed that it was a contemporary counterfeit, based on the unusual style of the dies that deviates from surrounding dates from the mint, as well as the use of a B punch for the E's in the legends, although the weight is correct for the issue. Sure to be a research piece for its future owner. Ex. Mexico Maxico Collection (Stack's January 2010, Lot 1319)
