Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-AA MS61 NGC, Metz mint, KM-Unl., Gad-338 (R3), Dup-1638A. Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Boldly rendered devices, precisely struck and sun-golden toned. The single example graded by NGC, standing high above the sole XF45 certified by PCGS. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country. Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 413)
