Louis XIV Douzain (15 Deniers) 1658-A AU55 NGC, Paris mint, KM197, Ciani-1976, Breen-273 (Extremely Rare), Gad-86 (R4), Dup-1579, L4L-169 (R4). 24mm. While of correct diameter for the denomination, without a noted weight we are unable to determine if this is a Piefort or standard weight issue, both of which are highly rare but the standard format coming to market far more infrequently. Though an aborted general lease granted by the King's Council to Pierre Tissier provided for the formal minting of such pieces using dies engraved by Jean Warin, records suggest that the emission was recalled soon after issue by orders of the Conseil d'état. Appropriately graded, displaying mild touches of handling to the crown and other central devices, advanced collectors will certainly take note as this piece remains in superior condition to most extant. One of only two submitted to NGC, this and the previous lot. Accompanied by a dealer tag. Privately Purchased from Wade Hinderling
