Description

Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (864-877) MS62 NGC, Palace mint, Class 2, MG-622 var. (legends), Dep-746 var. (same), Nou-54D var., cf. Lafaurie, "Moneta Palatina" (Francia Forschungen zur westeuropäischen Geschichte, Vol. 4 1977), 41-42 (different dies). 1.73gm. +CΛROLVS REX, cross pattée / +RALATIИΛ MOИEΛ, Karolus monogram. An ever-popular Palatial emission, which in this particular series was contemporary with the more prolific Gratia Dei Rex coinage. Imbued with cabinet iridescence, it is intriguing that the dies seen here were not recorded by Morrison and Grunthal or Nouchy, although they both record a P in PALATINA which, owing to a die flaw, looks like an R.
