Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (864-877) MS62 NGC, Meaux mint, Class 2, MEC I-875, MG-853 var., Dep-596 (25 examples studied), Nou-151A var. 1.60gm. +C • R • Λ • TI • Λ • D-I REX, Karolus monogram / +MEL • D • I • S IVIT • Λ • S, cross pattée. Among the more challenging mints for this otherwise prolific type, with perhaps as few as 5 occurring in sales records of the last 2 decades. We would note a small spot of unevenness and discoloration above the Karolus monogram and at the corresponding area of the reverse (the C in CIVITAS), suggesting a possible repair long ago. Regardless, one of the nicer specimens we have been able to locate.
