Prussia silver "Moses Mendelssohn" Medal 1729 UNC Details (Reverse Scratched) NGC, Wurzbach-6238, Hoffman-251, Mann-919, Stern-38. 43mm. 29gm. By Jacob Abraham & Son. MOSES MENDELSSON. Bust left / PHAEDON. Butterfly on skull. On Moses Mendelssohn, the "German Socrates," a Jewish philosopher to whose ideas the Haskalah, the 'Jewish enlightenment' of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is indebted. The reverse text refers to his most famous work, "Phädon: Or, On the Immortality of the Soul". Though the label describes the piece as '1729-Dated', the 'MDCCXXIX' text on the reverse refers to the birth year of Mendelssohn. A beautifully toned Mint State example, though unfortunately there are some pin scratches between the D and O in "PHAEDON' upon the reverse.
