Charles II Counterstamped "Royal" 8 Reales 1701 P-F VF Details (Holed) NGC, Potosi mint, KM-R26 (Rare), Cal-697, Lazaro-240 (R2). 27.11gm. C/S (XF Strong). Type II countermark. A popular type, the Royal 8 Reales is a scarce sub-series of the colonial 8 Reales. These issues were struck in specially prepared round flans with high-quality dies, for presentation purposes to the Spanish Royalty. Holed in the majority of the times, due to being used in official uniforms and as pendants. This specimen got into circulation and was overstruck decades later in Guatemala. Displaying argent surfaces, with dark crevices, full weight (despite the hole) and minor doubling to the devices (as usual).
