Description

Charles III 8 Reales 1787 NG-M MS64 Prooflike NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM36.2a, Elizondo-41, Cal-1018. A true paragon of its type, preserved in a nearly inconceivable state. A full strike to the planchet has resulted in a level of razor-sharpness that is usually reserved only for Patterns and Proofs, yielding a virtually medallic finish to this charming Spanish Dollar, while stunning Prooflike reflectivity bathes the fields to culminate in a sensational visual display. An undercurrent of sunset tone overlies the fields, gracing the obverse outer registers and entirety of the reverse to establish a sense of refined quality that eludes nearly all other survivors of the era. NGC has seen a total of three "PL" examples to date, and while this offering surprisingly ties for the finest with one other of these, it is worth noting that, by comparison, the next regular example down only certifies MS62--the sole non-Prooflike example recognized in Mint State condition. All said, we must simply bow our heads and agree with a succinct statement in the coin's previous description from when the Lissner collection was offered in 2014: "An unbelievable type coin." Ex. R.L. Lissner Collection (CNG-St. James's Auction 29, August 2014, Lot 1696); Purchased from M. Louis Teller in August 1989
