Kuang-hsü silver Restrike Pattern 2 Mace (2 Ch'ien) CD 1906 MS65 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn298, L&M-18, Kann-936, WS-0023, Wenchao-87 (rarity 3 stars). Restrike from original dies. A splendid gem survivor, exhibiting the trademark micro-fine stippling to the obverse surfaces from die rust of a restrike, while the reverse admits significant polishing to the die, resulting in an incredibly fresh finish. Remarkably, though produced some time after the cyclical date it bears, the dies show no evidence of stress, being free of cracks or significant wear, allowing for a full appreciation of the struck detail, which for its part is accented by a splendid iridescent envelope tone that leaves utterly little wanting. While assigned a traditional Mint State designation by NGC, we would note that PCGS typically assigns this series Specimen designations. Though NGC's census does not seem to display population data for the type, only a single piece has been certified a point finer by PCGS.
