Description

Republic 5 Francos 1891-A MS65 PCGS, Paris mint, KM12, Gomez-93. A gorgeous specimen of this one-year type, gem uncirculated with most attractive steel toning over essentially unmarked fields as expected for the designation. A true condition rarity in this select quality, with only a single piece graded higher by either third party grading service and among the finest seen by the cataloger. The only regular full fineness crown struck by this country, this issue was commissioned to the Allard Belgian company who had it struck at the Paris Mint (hence the "A" mintmark) from dies engraved by Paulin Tasset. The Paris mint origin doubted by Miguel Estrella (1979) can be confirmed in the "Annuaire Statistique de la France" corresponding to the years 1891-1893 (Vol. 15, pp. 641), where a mintage of 150,000 pieces is indicated. This select example should undoubtedly elicit considerable interest.
