Description

Sultans of Madura. Jalal al-Din Ahsan Shah (AH 734-740 / AH 1333-1339) gold Tanka AH 736 (AD 1335/1336) MS67 NGC, Hadrat Madura mint, Fr-625a (this coin), ICV-2686, Hull-Unl., G&G-Unl., Zeno-120432 (this coin). 11.01gm. An extremely rare full tanka from the reign of the first Sultan of Madura, preserved with needle-sharp execution and flawless original luster, certainly almost as if it left the mint yesterday. Prior to the publication of a gold tanka dated AH 735 in 2006 and the appearance of this coin on auction in 2013, no full tanka's were known of this ruler, with Goron and Goenka recording "a single gold coin weighing 3.66 g, which probably makes it equal to one of the contemporary south Indian pagodas or hons" (pg. 278). Very close in style to the Tankas of Daulatabad of his successor, Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad Damghan Shah, Steve Album has also pointed out that the legends reveal that Ahsan Shah laid claim to the caliphate. Ex. Hess-Divo Auction 237 (October 2014, Lot 516); Stephen Album Auction 15 (January 2013, Lot 918)
