Description

Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Sovereign of 30 Shillings ND (1584-1586) AU Details (Repaired) PCGS, Tower mint, Escallop mm, Sixth Issue, S-2529, N-2003 (R), Schneider-780. (escallop): ELIZABETH: D: G: ANG: | FRA: ET: HIB': REGINA:, Elizabeth enthroned facing within tressure, scepter in right hand, globus in left, portcullis at feet / (escallop) A • DNO • FACIV • EST • ISTVD • ET • EST • MIRAB' • IN • OCVLIS • NRS, royal shield over Tudor rose. An extraordinary issue from this early and beloved Tudor sovereign series, and one which should not be discounted in the least for the repair work noted on the holder; located between the mintmark and queen's crown on the obverse, it likely represents an expertly mended mount removal. A coin of this denomination represented an enormous purchasing power in the late 16th century, and its size and natural beauty led many such pieces to be used in jewelry, often leading to cleaning, bending, and tooling. Fortunately the present offering appears delightfully original, the flan producing not the least waviness, with the features admitting next to no flatness or blurring and intensifying in sharpness as the eye moves outwards.
