Description

Australia Internment Camp Hay 1 Shilling 1.3.1941 SB552b PCGS Choice About New 58. A rarely seen offering from Australia's internment camp in Hay, New South Wales. The first of those interned arrived via train from Sydney in 1940, after a sea voyage from Great Britain. This first wave of prisoners were of mostly German and Austrian decent, followed by Italians. At Camp Hay, subsections were created for different ethnicities. This specific banknote is issued for Camp 7. The clause at back stipulates that this 1 Shilling was only to be honored by the bank within this camp. Camp Hay was retired in 1946. Rarely seen today, such notes are of considerable historic interest. Only the briefest circulation is seen.
