2-Piece Set of Certified gold & silver "Death of Vittorio Emanuele II" Medals 1878-Dated NGC, 1) silver Medal - MS61, 69mm. 139.55gm. 2) gold Medal - MS63 Prooflike, 69mm. 237.01gm. Comozzi-Vertova-1633. By Filippo Speranza. Commemorating the internment of Vittorio Emanuele II in the Pantheon. An immediately impressive set of historical medals, not least for their large size and visibly high relief. Vittorio Emanuele II passed away in Rome in 1878, shortly after meeting with envoys from Pope Pius IX, who reversed the king's earlier excommunication for attacking the Papal army in 1860. While bronze examples of this commemorative occasionally come to auction, and silver strikings even more seldom, we have been unable to find another example of the astonishing gold medal here included in our survey of recent auction records. This set is sold with a pink velvet presentation case issued by the jeweler Carmagnola of Turin.
