Description

Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1361-1369) MS63 NGC, Tower mint, Treaty Period, S-1502, N-1231, Schneider-94 var. (saltire below sail). 7.69gm. xЄD | WΛRD: DЄI: GRΛ: RЄX: ΛnGL: DnS: hyB: Ƶ (retrograde): ΛQVT' (double saltire stops), crowned half-figure of Edward standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / +IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBΛT, Є within quatrefoil at center of cross fleurdelissee, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. Incredible quality for this quintessentially late medieval hammered gold type, nearly frosty over the struck features and remarkably well-centered, the entirety of the legends legible without the least difficulty. Tied for the finest of this Treaty-period issue seen to-date by NGC, and a clear prestige piece for its future owner. From the Storck Collection
