Japan Greater Japan Imperial National Bank, Tokyo 2 Yen ND (1873) Pick 11 PMG Very Fine 25. A simply beautiful second denomination of this seldom-seen series. Printed by the Continental Banknote Company in New York, this note has many interesting design features and identifying characteristics. While printed in the United States, these notes were then overprinted in Japan, with signatures and regional markers. The two circular overprints indicate the city and branch of issue. Notice the two coins depicted on the back, flanking each side of the Imperial Palace, which indicate that this note was redeemable for a gold 2 Yen coin. Minor repairs and small margin splits are seen on this otherwise handsome example. Very rare in any grade, and desirable. Simply beautiful designs are seen on both sides of this 19th century type.
