Description

dating: late 17th Century provenance: Venice, Replica of the famous medal struck at the Nuremberg mint in 1687, Opus Georg Hautsch. Silver, oval, on the obverse the scene of the Doge receiving the surrender and homage of the brothers Mustafà and Hassan Pascià, with the inscription 'PARCERE SUBIECTIS ET DEBELLARE SUPERBOS / SCIT NOBILIS IRA LEONIS'. On the reverse, the Lion of St Mark, victorious, rampant (left), holding a sword and clutching a dolphin, symbol of the supremacy of the sea, in one paw an arrow and a broken bow. Inscription 'EX UTROQUE VICTOR'. No inscription on the cut. 54 g. dimensions 5.5 x 7 cm.
