Despite its relatively frequent appearance, specimens in such outstanding preservation are extremely rare. This is largely due to the coin’s prolonged unofficial circulation—used at the value of 2 kopecks until at least 1788, resulting in over 50 years of wear (a few known examples were even overstruck directly into 2 kopeck pieces dated 1788 (SPM and MM) from the so-called “cross” 5 kopeck type, attesting to their extended use). This piece stands out both for its rarity in high grade and its numismatic relevance, making it a notable addition to any advanced collection of Russian copper coinage.
