Description

Addedomaros Crescent Cross. Sills class 2, dies 9/17. c.45-25 BC. Gold stater. 18-20mm. 5.61g. Crossed-wreath pattern with two central crescents back-to-back./ Well-formed horse right with corded mane, three pellets and ringed-pellet under head, pellet below tail, AӨӨIIDOMA and ringed-pellet above, eight-spoked wheel and pellet below. ABC 2514, VA 1605, BMC 2390-94, DK 486, S 200. CCI 20.0422 (this coin). Good EF, large flan of rose gold, stunning horse, beautifully ornamented, virtually entire inscription visible. RARE type EXCESSIVELY RARE die pair, only one other recorded.

The quartering of the golden disc of the sun may represent the four great seasonal festivals of Celtic Britain and Ireland: Imbolc, which was connected with the lactation of ewes and the goddess Brigit; Beltaine, associated with summer, the start of open pasturing and the sun-god Belenus; Lughnasad, which was linked with the harvest and the Celtic god Lugh; and Samhain, which marked the end of the Celtic year when gods visited men, supernatural beings changed shape and the year died and was reborn. The reverse of Follows’ Crescent Cross stater is the finest we’ve seen of this type. The galloping sun-horse is captured completely, thanks to the large and slightly ovoid flan; every spoke of the sun-wheel is crisply engraved; and, to cap it all, almost the whole of the AӨӨIIDOMA inscription is wholly legible.
