Description

Addedomaros Flower. Sills class 2, dies 18/27. c.45-25 BC. Gold quarter stater. 13mm. 1.33g. Seven petalled flower around central ringed-pellet, pellets around./ Horse right, ringed-pellets around. ABC 2526, VA 1608, BMC 2416, DK 492, S 203. CCI 04.2436 (this coin). Unobtrusive hairline crack, otherwise Good VF, neat round flan of rose gold, centrally struck. Ex John Follows collection, ex Chris Hamlyn collection. VERY RARE only 17 with seven petalled flower.

This is the only gold quarter stater we know, British or Gaulish, which has a floral motif as its sole central image on an otherwise plain field. Like the partially blank obverse of the previous coin (lot 39), the mostly plain field of this quarter reminds us of the influence of the Cantiaci on early coins of North Thames rulers (see lots 1, 32, 36). A delightful gold coin of unique artistic appeal. And it’s very rare. Published in Divided Kingdoms, p.550 (this coin).
