Description

Cheesefoot Head. Sills Hampshire British Q Derivative, dies 1r/3. c.55-45 BC. Gold stater. 16mm. 4.66g. Wreath motif with two hidden faces./ Triple-tailed horse right with linear mane, charioteer’s arms above, small ring and pelletal sun in front, small ring and six-spoked wheel below. ABC 761, VA−, BMC 476, DK 214, S−. CCI 09.4693 (this coin). VF/Good VF, neat flan of dark rose-gold, full wheel and pelletal sun. Ex John Follows collection. Found Crondall, Hampshire, 2006. EXTREMELY RARE only eleven other solid gold examples known.

There is a unique bird-like face concealed on the obverse at 7 o’clock. The three-tailed horse is particularly well centred and we can see the two main ornaments: the large pelletal sun in front and the wheel below, with all six spokes clearly visible. Published in Divided Kingdoms, pp.226 and 248 (this coin). Not in VA nor Spink.
